Le Masque by mynti Le Masque by mynti
Well, after months with some reflection on this piece, I've tried several replacement backgrounds but none quite seem to fit the composition well. I have done some major detailing, which might not quite be evident in this smaller image, but finally this painting is finished and ready for print.

Painting History:
Originally composed for *girltripped's contest, the original entry is here: [link]

The photograph I referenced is no longer available in their gallery, but it was a black and white photograph from this shoot: [link]

The major change that you will notice with this deviation is the mask, which is mostly composed of tiny dots that took forever to paint by hand. In the source file, however, I also smoothed out a lot of the skin, added details and eyelashes to the eyes, added detail and shine to the frame, and changed the background colors so the wall she stands beside is a bit brighter blue.

Technical Details:
114 hours total
Painter X mostly. Some Photoshop CS2, and later Photoshop CS3.
Wacom Intuos 3 6x8" tablet

My inspiration:

When I saw the photograph, it reminded me of a time long ago, where many-jeweled patrons dance in a great hall... and here is this lovely lady, come away from the din to meet by the painting... is she falling for some lovestruck dood who she could never marry? Or perhaps a plot thickens...

I really like this one... I'm thinking after the new year this will be one of the first I buy, along with some penguin stuff... I wonder how big I'll get it. I need to think of how I want to do my room, and I've been finding some really cool stuff here.

Wow... I love the depth of detail, Gracie!
Just one little blip - there's not quite enough detail in the border around the mask (like it could use some sort of texture) but it's amazing. I wish I could paint like this D:
Especially the lips!

Hey hun :) Unfortunately for me, I think it's simply a matter of not being able to show all the detail in this smaller size. This is one of those paintings that, in my opinion, needs to be big! (It's why I didn't even enable 4x6" prints, to me that size doesn't do the painting any justice).. Here's an idea of the mask border... [link]

Some things just get lost when sizing it down..

aaaah
I'm so sorry :faint: Now I feel bad for putting my foot in my mouth. Excuse me while I remove it. :lmao:
That makes a lot of sense. I have quite a few pieces that look terrible when downsized (namely photomanips since they're so... sensitive, pixel-wise.)

Oh no worries, it's difficult to tell. This piece, though, yes. The mask is mostly made up of dots... I think nearly the entire thing is covered in them. It's why it looks so shiny! :giggle: But yeah, I think this is perhaps my most detailed painting I've ever done... it's so huge of a file :D I just hope people look at the detail shots to understand that, because I'm so used to looking at it all big on the screen :giggle:

:tears: I'm so jealous. The one thing I've always wanted to do is paint, and I just can't. I'm over it now  photoshop helps a lot, but still... You're lucky to have the talent you've got. :giggle:
More detailed? Really? Moreso than the fairy one? D: The feathers are GORGEOUS! How long did they take?
I sent you a note, by the way :paranoid:

Kara and Wisscha was detailed, sure, but at a smaller dpi than this one.. and well, Wishes is at 100% resolution here on deviantART... that one is almost a pixel painting. So yeah, this one trumps them all in terms of time and details :D

The feathers, I'm not sure how long they took, but at least 10 hours or so I'm guessing. I just record my overall time via playlists and notepad :giggle:

what was the overall time!? That's amazing! D:
Patience have not I. :giggle: So this is an entirely different kind of painting?

:iconmynti:

The overall time is 114 hours. It's not really different in type... I used painter mostly.. photoshop a wee bit (painting eyelashes in painter is not as fun... but I'm not quite comfortable with painter entirely yet... still getting used to it :D ) It's just different in how I approached it, the resolution (this is the largest resolution I've worked at so far) and it's taken longer than my other works have... more pixels to paint :)
